Getting Around
Transportation options and navigation tips for Chiang Mai
The easiest and most reliable way to get around Chiang Mai is using ride-hailing apps. They provide transparent pricing, GPS tracking, and eliminate language barriers.
Grab
The dominant ride-hailing app in Thailand (like Uber). Available 24/7 with good coverage across Chiang Mai. Accepts cash or card payment.
Typical fare: 40-100 THB within city
Airport: 150-200 THB to city center
Bolt
Alternative to Grab, often slightly cheaper. Good backup option if Grab has surge pricing or long wait times.
The iconic red pickup trucks with benches in the back. Shared taxis that run fixed and flexible routes. Cheapest option but requires negotiation and local knowledge.
How to Use:
- • Flag one down on the street
- • Tell driver your destination before getting in
- • Agree on price first (20-40 THB shared, 60-150 THB private)
- • Ring bell when you want to get off
Motorbike Scooters
Very popular for long stays. Provides freedom and convenience. Rental: 150-250 THB/day, 3,000-5,000 THB/month. Requires passport as deposit and international driving license (technically required, not always checked).
Safety note: Wear a helmet (required by law, 500 THB fine). Drive carefully - traffic can be chaotic. Ensure rental includes insurance. Not recommended if inexperienced with motorbikes.
Bicycles
Great for exploring Old City and nearby areas. Many guesthouses offer free bicycles. Rental shops: 50-100 THB/day. Chiang Mai is relatively flat and bike-friendly, though watch for traffic.
For families, groups, or regular transportation needs, hiring a private driver can be cost-effective and convenient. Especially useful for day trips outside Chiang Mai or airport transfers.
Typical Rates:
- • Half day (4 hours): 1,200-1,500 THB
- • Full day (8 hours): 2,000-2,500 THB
- • Airport transfer: 300-400 THB
